003
Compact General-Purpose SetupA compact straight-cutter configuration for general depth work across dados, grooves, and tenon cheeks.
ABOUT COWRYMAN
After the rough cut, the remaining job is often to bring a dado, groove bottom, tenon cheek, hinge recess, or shallow mortise to a consistent depth. Cowryman Router Planes are built for that controlled finishing work.
THE WORK
Saws, routers, and chisels can remove most of the waste. The final stage often requires slower, more controlled work: leveling a dado, cleaning a groove bottom, refining a tenon cheek, or bringing a hinge recess or shallow mortise to a consistent depth.
A Router Plane supports that final adjustment by referencing the surrounding surface while the cutter works at a controlled depth. Cowryman designs around this specific part of the woodworking process.
PRACTICAL STRUCTURE
A woodworking tool should support the work without adding unnecessary complexity.
Cowryman combines stainless-steel bodies, one-piece HSS cutters, and direct adjustment and locking structures. The aim is not to eliminate maintenance, but to keep routine care, adjustment, and cutter replacement understandable and manageable.
Different models use different mechanisms, but the same principle remains: enough structure for the task, without making the tool unnecessarily complicated.

MODEL DIFFERENCES
A compact straight-cutter configuration for general depth work across dados, grooves, and tenon cheeks.
Uses larger outward-angled wooden handles for a wider grip while retaining the straight-cutter system.
Uses the larger-base structure for broader surface support. The complete-tool configuration includes a fence.
Uses the same larger-base structure as the 022, adds spring-assisted fine depth adjustment, and includes a fence in the complete-tool configuration.
Uses a dual-screw cutter-locking structure. Its compatible fence is sold separately.
Uses a dedicated L-shaped cutter for corners, edges, hinge mortises, and narrow recesses where straight-cutter access is limited.

PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT
Cowryman has continued developing Router Plane designs since 2017. Changes have been guided by workshop use, customer questions, and the different access, grip, base, adjustment, and cutter requirements that appear across woodworking tasks.
The current 003 is the fourth generation of that model. Its development reflects the same practical approach used across the range: refine the parts that affect handling and use without adding complexity simply for its own sake.

CUTTER COMPATIBILITY
Different tasks require different cutter access. Cowryman uses two distinct one-piece HSS cutter families so the cutter configuration can match the work rather than forcing one shape into every situation.

Used by models 003, 040, 022, 035, and 038 for general depth work across dados, grooves, and tenon cheeks.

Used by model 042 for corners, edges, hinge mortises, and narrow recesses where straight-cutter access is limited.
Cutter-only options do not include a Router Plane. Check the cutter type and model compatibility before ordering.
